Working With Greenback Expat Tax Services In 4 Easy Steps
Below, you will find a brief overview of how our expatriate tax return process works. We will always find a way to accommodate individual circumstances, so don’t ever hesitate to ask questions.
- 1: Register
-
Register to get paired with an accountant and start your individualized process
As soon as you decide to work with us, the first step is to register. We can then gather some initial information and match you up with one of the accountants on our team. This first step formally engages us to do your tax return and commits you to working exclusively with Greenback Expat Tax Services.
Within one business day after registering, one of the accountants on our team will contact you via email about your circumstances and the services you’re seeking.
Need to catch up on multiple years of returns? Have State filing requirements? Don’t know exactly what you need to do? This initial round of communication will help you and your Greenback accountant iron out all the details.
- 2: Complete Return
-
Work with your accountant to complete your return
We will set up a virtual folder for you in our secure data portal. This system enables you to upload the documents that your accountant needs to prepare your return. Your Greenback accountant will post a questionnaire for you to fill out that tells you what documents you need to collect; you upload the documents and the questionnaire, and we crunch the numbers!
If you don’t have access to a scanner, you can mail us documents (doing so usually adds a couple of days to the process). Your accountant will begin preparing your US expat tax return once you have uploaded all the necessary documents and will contact you for further information, if necessary. In most cases, we have your return posted within 5 business days of receiving all the information we need from you. If you need faster service, just ask, and we will try our best to accommodate you. Upon completion, your expat tax return will be posted to your folder on our secure data portal.
- 3: Review
-
Review your return and make your payment
Payment will be due five days after you receive your draft US tax return. An invoice will be sent to you as soon as we upload your return for you to review. We accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express. You should review your return as soon as we upload it. We will be happy to clarify anything for you or make changes to your return if necessary. Even after you make payment, we are still happy to make changes to your return should you need any.
Once you have confirmed that you are happy with your US tax return and you have paid the invoice, we will upload your finalized return to your folder on our secure data portal for your records.
- 4: Send
-
Send your return to the IRS
In most cases, we will be able to e-file the US tax return on your behalf. There are some circumstances where the IRS prohibits e-filing (for example, if you are late filing your US tax return). If this applies to you, we will provide you with the instructions you need to send your US tax return by mail.
